How to Learn Spanish Fluently and Sound Like a Native Speaker

Hits smaller text tool iconmedium text tool iconlarger text tool icon

Going beyond the basics and developing proficiency in another language is dependent upon several factors. In order to learn Spanish fluently you will have to have access to hearing the language as spoken by native speakers from specific regions.

Although Spanish is one of the world's most used languages, probably second or third in the world, if you live in an area that does not have many Spanish speakers this could be a problem for you. For most of us the only recourse would be to sign up for a study programme and even then there is no guarantee that the lecturer would necessarily be a native Spanish speaker; they may be a language expert, true, but it is important if you wish to learn Spanish fluently that you have learnt it from a native speaker.

Fortunately, many of the courses that are available to buy from bookstores or online have native Spanish speakers providing the conversation exercises for you to copy. Fluency in any language comes with mastery of the sounds, familiarity with the structure of the language, its grammar and verb conjugations and sensitivity to the appropriateness of idioms and expressions commonly used in everyday speech.

Any Spanish will be useful to you but if you are interested in a particular region or country there are subtle differences in the language and if you want to learn Spanish fluently and sound like a native speaker you would need to be aware of these differences. Spanish generally is called 'espanol' although this is known as 'castellano' (Castilian, after Castile) when considered as part of the regional context where there might be alternatives like Galician, Catalan or Basque dialects used or even the Hispanic Spanish prevalent in the Americas.
