Learning a foreign language can be very rewarding. There is the satisfaction of knowing that you can speak with someone in their native language. There is the sense of achievement that comes when your boss recognizes that you have a valuable skill. Perhaps you have thought of learning to speak Spanish, either for self-improvement or to improve your career. Maybe you plan on traveling to Spain or Latin America where you could apply your language skills.
The Spanish speaking population of North America is growing by leaps and bounds. Whatever negative feelings you may have about communicating in a language other than in English, should be put aside.
Learning to speak another language is just too enjoyable to let the opportunity pass you by. There are several methods available to learn Spanish. These methods are available to almost everyone.
The first method would be to sign up for a beginning Spanish class at your local community college. The instruction can be excellent and normally the classes at the community college level are not very expensive. The textbooks will probably be your greatest expense. Be sure to check out the instructor's reputation to see if he or she might be a good fit for you.
The second method would be to go to your local bookstore such as Borders, or Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com, or whatever is available in your area. Check out the language section and should find a variety of books and possibly CDs on learning to speak Spanish. I would recommend finding something that is not too technical. Focus on what will be easy to learn. You will find yourself enjoying studying more if you find that you are learning phrases and vocabulary that you can use right away.
The third method offers some amazing possibilities. Rather than going to a formal class or trying to teach yourself, why not try one of the Spanish language courses that are available to use on your computer. These courses can be downloaded from the internet, purchased in CD form to play on your computer or CD player, as well as interactive courses taught over the internet. These courses are usually very practical, meaning that you can apply your lessons immediately. They also have the advantage of immediate feedback and positive reinforcement to assist you in your learning.
Whatever method you chose be sure and put it to practice right away. Never feel embarrassed to try out your Spanish. Most people enjoy the fact that you are trying to communicate with them in their native tongue. I have found this to be true, whether I spoke Korean, Chinese, Spanish, or Russian. People like to communicate and will appreciate your efforts in learning Spanish.
